Just checked the prices for second hand Kia K900s (Kia’s flagship introduced around a year ago) and couldn’t believe my eyes. You can get a completely
over
loaded, RWD, V8 fullsize luxury sedan with pretty much any option you can think of, including the VIP package that gives you electric reclining rear seats, thats practically brand new, for around
35.000$
now. Considering the cars MSRP of around 70.000$, this means the car lost around 50% of its value in just 12 months. This is completely insane.
Personally I couldn’t care less about the badge or the apparently old school landyard like ride. I would be the first one at a Kia dealership to make the deal of the century. Unfortunately Kia probably won’t sell it to us here in Yurop, so I can only dream...
Here’s a fully loaded 2015 with beautiful white leather, every single available option and 42k miles for around 32 grand:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
For people that think the mileage is fairly high, heres one with 12k miles for 32.000$:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
EDIT: Are the links working for others? Seems like Autotrader doesn’t like showing the ads.

Nah, I’d rather have a used Infiniti M class. People don’t think about those much either and you get a Nissan. I guess because I have Z I am sort of a Nissan guy, I would rather have a Japanese car.

While are are right 42,000 miles is a lot for a car that is just a year old.

Indeed it is. But as we all know you have to differentiate between long distance miles and short trips. Also, don’t forget Kia gives you a 10 year!/100.000 mile powertrain warranty. That alone would be worth it.

I do like Infiniti’s M cars, and they are overlooked by most. But when it comes to luxury, I doubt the older M could hold a candle to the K900.

I have had the same thought about these and the Hyundai Genesis/Equus. The only thing is how much depriciation is left in them. Do they take another 50% hit in the second year?

You should be able to tell by checking prices of the Equus, it’s been out for a few years now.

I guess I could have worded that better. The Equus (Equui?) are down to 15-20k for 2011 and 12 models. I would think that at that point you could pick one up without any huge hits.

I just love the fact that you have the option to buy a great, left field V8 luxury sedan that you don’t see too often on the road for that kind of money. The badge doesn’t play a role at all in that case. Like I said, I would seriously consider it if they were available over here.

Yep. Kia, Hyundai, and Mitsubishi all do that in order to be sure that they don’t have to cover a large amount of their cars up until 100k.

Wow, I was basically unaware of this car. I would like to add a big land yacht to my garage in the next couple of years, too. I’ll have to keep my eye on these, I’d bet they’ll probably bottom out at another 50% less than this.

I saw one parked at the grocery store a couple of months ago and it got the wheels turning. I was thinking along the same lines, pretty cheap and pretty luxurious it could be cool to own one, I think I would get bored with one though.

If I were going to do this, I’d go for the K900's more attractive (inside & out) cousin, the Hyundai Equus. Still, a screamingly good deal all around.

They definitely will. Kia added a 3.8l V6 this year which should increase fuel economy slightly. Apart from that, I really cannot see a reason why this shouldn’t be on anyone’s list when looking for a great luxury car.

Personally Im not the biggest fan of the first Equus Hyundai sold in the states, styling wise. The new one might be a different story. It probably won’t take too long for it to come down do similar price levels.

If you took off the Kia badges and replaced them with Lexus badges and stuck it on a stand at the NY Auto Show, I’d believe it. And that’s a lot of car for the money, and reliable.

I can imagine most would have trouble telling the rear of the latest LS apart from that of the K900. They are fairly similar.

There’s also some Toyota Avalon in there, Fusion/Aston in the front end, and some Infiniti M from the beltline up, especially at the rear. Not that any of this is a criticism. It’s just that a design that isn’t derivative is a rare thing, like the first Taurus. And love Bangle or hate him (I’m mostly the latter) he did some interesting things.

It almost doesn’t matter if you’re going to keep the thing and just drive it. Cost per mile is the thing, and it’s also important that you like it. If you spend a lot of time in the driver’s seat, you need to be happy.

I truly wish cars like this would be more popular. Diversity is a good thing, and even though I really like what the established (and less established) manufacturers are offering, it would be a shame to not be able to chose something like a luxury Kia, something thats unique in its own ways.

This is true..but Kia (and Hyundai to a less extent) are stuck in a chicken and egg scenario with luxury cars. That market is very much badge and legacy dependent...value in product isn’t as important to buyers compared to the mainstream market. Just look at Cadillac, they have the legacy (or had the legacy) and they are making good products, but they can’t overcome the snob factor.

I had Cadillac in mind when I was typing this reply. It is a shame, really. On the other hand Lexus could prove (in the US at least) that producing extremely high quality vehicles for the luxury segments without really having a reputation for luxury cars can work. On the other hand Toyota did have a reputation for high quality vehicles, so theres that. Also, now that this niche is taken, Hyundai/Kia will have to figure out something else that will make them stand apart from the rest, which probably is harder than ever. We’ll see how the Genesis brand goes.

The Tucson probably still is better off than the K900, with its much lower starting price, the SUV/Crossover craze and all. The demand for it is there, the demand for a 65 grand fullsize Kia isn’t unfortunately.

Part of what made Lexus successful is the long term build quality, as you mentioned but also a commitment to having a top-notch dealer experience. The brand was very strict in the early days on how their dealers conducted themselves. Hyundai learned this the hard way with the Genesis brand cars and Cadillac still hasn’t figured out that you can’t have rejects from the Sopranos pushing your product.

Yes! I've written before that I found the same kinds of deals on K900s. Almost no miles on them and $35-38k, even at Carmax. Sit in one and you'll see that you don't compromise anything over a Lexus. I tried to convince my wife to look seriously at one, but she was dead set on the Sedona for several reasons (and she was right, but still I had to try).

Yeah, they definitely aren’t at the K900 level of depreciation, but these Tucsons that had MSRPs of $30,000+ (these are ones with basically every option except AWD) are now three years old with 40,000 miles and cost between 15 and 20,000 dollars. Comparable EX-L CR-Vs are like 23, 24,000 still.

Tom, I’m still optimistic that Hyundai and Kia can sell luxury in the long run. It’s been a lot of years since the Excel, but they now have a hard-earned reputation for quality and value. Yeah the luxury market is dominated by badge snobbery, but I truly believe there is a decent market of people who want to treat themselves now that they can and don’t care what other people think. I park in a work garage full of Lexus, Porsche BMW, Jag, Maserati, and even Bentley. But there is this one K900, and I hope someday I can meet the owner and shake his hand, because I suspect he’s smarter than all of them.

What I don’t understand is who are these people who paid sticker and then sold at a huge loss to Carmax a year later? People whose buddies at the club took them aside and convinced them they’re a disgrace? Or maybe these were fleet vehicles of some sort?

The cars on there were most likely registered by Kia dealers, press vehicles and vehicles supplied by Kia to certain employees (company car). There might be people that actually bought them thinking they got an excellent deal and had to get rid of it again a year later because of financial struggles, but most of them will have had Kia as their first owner one way or another.

I think the Hyundai has a shot and within the next 10 years will be recognized along side other tier 2 luxury brands like Acura, Infiniti, Lincoln etc...the new Genesis is really nice and is selling much better than the last generation. The Equus will take time to find serious buyers, but I don’t think Kia can make it. The dealer network is too used to preying on credi challenged customers and for some reason that brand is still seen as “cheap” among mainstream buyers.

You may be right about Kia, but our perception when we bought our Sedona was that the showroom did a good job presenting the car. That may be our bias carrying over because we perceived the Sedona as more premium than the other vans we had seen. Still, my understanding is that the K900 was built for the Korean market primarily, and the US is just extra credit. But I'll be sad to see them go.
